When to Start your Kids in Organized Basketball

Introduce Children to Basketball Responsibly

Basketball can literally change your life!! If talent and skill mesh with great size and athleticism your child can become a High School All American, get a free education from a 4 year University and even become a professional who earns over 200 million in his career. Easy now, LOL, let’s get him through the 1st grade first. But really, when should the journey start? Parents ask me all the time, Coach Ricky when is it the right time to start your kids in organized basketball? My answer is always the same, they should start around 7 or 8 years old. Playing for your local recreation center or YMCA is always a good place to start.

At this point the focus should be on having fun and really learning the fundamentals to build a good foundation on how to actually play. After a year or 2, if your kiddo has a good grasp of the basics and they start to love it then it may be time to introduce them to a more competitive environment like, AAU or travel ball.

As much as I love basketball, I think that kids at a young age should try as many sports as possible to stay busy and active. Usually when this happens the cream rises to the top and they tend to let you know which sport they actually like best. Fingers crossed its hoops!

Message from the Coach

“Charlotte has been home to me for over 10 years. People have always asked me to do a basketball camp and now the time has finally come to make it a reality. It’s time to share my knowledge of the game with today’s youth. I feel obligated to help any and everybody who loves this game as much as I do. Through Game Ready Skills and Development I hope to give back to the Charlotte Community in more ways than one. I hope to inspire every boy and girl that trains with us, so they can become the player they always dreamed of.”
